Eldar Battle review - 2k

My third game with the new Eldar and I'm 3 wins from 3 games.

This is more of a review than a full report as I won't be going into turn by turn details just covering the major points.

I played a fellow gamer at BattleUX in Uxbridge last night, 2000 points, he brought his Ultramarines I took a mixed list of Eldar.

We played purge the alien, long table edge set up.

I had;
Autarch(warlord, assault of blades)
Fire sabre, fusion gun, warp jump generator.

Farseer(doom, fortune, executioner)
Both sets of runes
Singing spear

2 x 3 windriders w/ Shuricannons
2 x 5 rangers

8 wraithblades, axes

5 wraithguard, D-scythes
Wave serpent, scatter laser, Shuricannon

10 banshees
Exarch, executioner, shield of grace, disarm Wave serpent, t/l lance, Shuricannon

9 warp spiders
Exarch, spinneret rifle, fast shot, stalker Power blades

8 dark reapers

He had;
Calgar

Chaplain

5 assault terminators (2 claws)
All the above in a LR crusader

10 terminators
Assault cannon

2 tac squads (combat squadded)
Flamers, missile launchers

5 combat scouts

5 sniper scout
Telion

Typoon speeder

Predator destructor
Heavy bolters

On my left flank I deployed my reapers and one unit of rangers in cover. They faced off against a unit of tac marines and the sniper scouts with telion backed up by the the typhoon. I dominated this side of the board. Only telion remained alive by the end of the battle.

My right flank; rangers, lance-serpent with banshees.  These guys faced off against the other tac squad and the combat scouts.

In the centre I had my wraith blades with attached farseer, and my second serpent with the D-scythes on board.

They faced off against Calgar and his bodyguard in the crusader and the predator.

I held my spiders with attached Autarch in reserve along with my 2 squadrons of Windriders.

He held his 10 man terminator unit in reserve.

The centre field was the focus of the game with the crusader rushing forward and engaging my wraithblades. However charging though dangerous terrain felled 3 terminators and took a wound off Calgar!

The Wraithblades, aided by fortune and doom held out for 4 turns before finally succumbing. They did however whittle the unit down to 2 terminators and left Calgar on a single wound.

During this combat the 10 man terminator unit deep-striked next to Calgar and in front of my second waveserpent.  My D-scythe Wraithguard dutifully disembarked and slaughtered them to a man.

But this was purely a revenge killing as the terminators wiped out half my warp spiders and my Autarch which had arrived on my right.

In the later stages of the game my banshees utterly failed to root out a unit of marines not helped in any small part by taking the full fusillade from the land raider crusader which felled 6 of the unit making them fall back. With little chance of pulling off a charge the unit had little further impact on the game.

The crusader must surly be blessed not sustaining a single hit despite spending the entire game maneuvering through dangerous terrain.

The game ended on turn 6 the score being 9-6 to me.

On reflection,

Banshees have real trouble pressing forward to assault. Ill be looking else where to fill this role. Infiltrating scorpions or serpent-borne ghost-sword wielding Wraithblades. I may try the Banshees in a support or counter assault role in the future but they're unlikely to feature as a main spearhead unit.

Reapers are boss. They dominated an entire flank an now can be taken in sufficient numbers to weather a storm themselves. As an auto include in not so sure but they are definitely fighting for one of the heavy slots. they fared arguably better than my usual unit of scatter walkers and aren't as fragile.

Neither of us took flyers, This would have been an interesting dimension on the game and may well have swung it in favor of the flyers side.

The ghostaxe wielding Wraithblades did well to tie up and whittle down Clagar and his bodyguard unit but they are certainly not shock troops. They were the best unit for the job but they were always going to be second fiddle to assault terminators.
