Bonesinger

After 3 years of umm-ing and err-ing about this model I finally bit the bullet and paid an exorbitant amount of money for him.

Well worth it in my eyes though. I'm going to have to build a full character back story behind this guy. He's a bit special.

I'll be posting every step of this guys progress towards the battlefield so watch this space for modelling, painting and background info...

Battle report: Maurader horde vs gobbo squigs

My marauder horde faced a night goblin squig ramshackle last night and it didn't go too well for me...

Squigs! Faasands of 'em!!
A friend and I played 2400 points last night after work at the local wargame club we help to run. He has a bit of a reputation for being tricksy and using all sorts of goblin-esque schenanighans. So I thought I'd play him at his own game.

My Northman horde. Bot a warrior in sight.
I normally squeeze as many skullcrushers as I can into my armies and load up on big killie powerful lords.

I knew my friend wasn't going to change his list to tailor my army but I thought I'd try to throw him off track.

Firstly I was worried by his fanatics. He usually takes 9 fanatics and 2 mangler squigs. So 4 units of warhound with vanguard and 2 units of marauder horsemen with throwing axes would take care of them I would have thought. And they did.

I had a further 8 marauder horsemen with shields and light armour on escort duty for my sorceror Lord and my exalted Battle standard.

The rest of my army was Tzeentch daemons.  A Herald in a unit of 18 horrors, 4 screamers and 5 flamers.

I'm an equal opportunities killer. I kill Squigs of all shapes and sizes. Here we see a Giant Squig, in game terms, its a giant.

even more squigs
I'm not going to go into a full battle report however Ill cover some of the major points.

The game started off with me making a vanguard move and enticing out the fanatics who dutifully killed a shed load of their own gobbos by moving through their own units.

Magic in the first two turns managed to damage our own forces more than the enemy. I managed to miscast and wound every sorceror on my side. the gobbos managed to send some magical vortex the wrong way and the daemon winds of magic turned a shamen into a herald of Khorne!

Word to the wise. If your mate sets up the battlefield before you reach your table, make sure you swap sides so he can't stick his doom diver in a tower....

My vanguard move to draw out the fanatics

On my left flank my daemons size up the Giant (squig)

After a fanatic put paid to the marauders and my Tzeentch herald miscast and took a wound off my sorceror lord it only took 22 exploding squigs to kill off my 2 remaining characters.
When I eventually managed to engage to huge units of squigs I learnt the hard way that they hurt. If you do managed to break them they explode and kill you anyway.

My daemons did manage to down a giant before it got to cause any real danger. Screamer flyby and flamer barrage took care of that.

My main unit of horsemen with the sorceror and Battle standard being bored of sitting round dodging magical vorticies, mangler squigs and fleeing warhounds decided to charge through a fanatic,
bad idea. it killed 6 horsemen leaving only characters left.  They did manage to vbeat the squigs in combat but they then exploded and well, I died howwibly howwibly...
goblin advance

1  Screamer Vs 30 goblins, why did I charge them again???

Wraiths - bases and basecoats

A small update on my wraiths.  The pilot two models get primed and base coated and the rest of the D-Scythe unit get mounted in ingenious fashion.

I was aware that a Cassandora Yellow wash over a pure white prime would be a little too bright so I washed the two models with Sepia first...

...and then the Cassandora yellow wash went on top.  I think I'm going to need a second coat to give the colour a richness but on first impressions I think the initial Sepia wash was a success, adding shade into the recesses.  Onlytime will tell...

Mounting your old Wraithguard...
Many many have the old Wraithguard models and will need to re-base on to 40mm bases. Problem. there are no slots on 40mm bases but fear not! I came up with an ingenious way of mounting them.

What you will need....
Take off the slot from the bottom of the model...

File away any protruding bits of metal....

apologies for the photo but hopefully you'll see the scoring of the feet...

secret ingredient...

Superglue the feet and place on the desired place on the base. I recommend Gel type superglue and not the runny stuff. (avoid GW glue like the plague it sticks nothing. you have a better chance trying to jail Silvio Berlusconi)

Now clump a load of liquid greenstuff on top of the feet and place the model back on the base.

looks ugly so smooth some of the excess on to the surrounding area.  don't worry if it looks a mess the basing will cover / disguise it.

Blue peter moment; Here's some I made earlier...

...and the whole gang...

Did you notice my makeshift Spiritseer? No? here's a close up. Noticed I've liquid green stuff'd out the eyes to blind him.  You'll notice the top of his staff is from Eldrad's staff of Ulthran. for some reason I had 2 of these milling about waiting to be objective markers..

yes its not straight, its not supposed to be...

..and because you're still reading, here's a treat. My Wraithseer Gerald.

yes I still need to finish him.

Ghost warrior conversions

I'm determined to get my Wraith army back on the table soon.

To this end I've set about converting some of my old wraithguard to carry the new über lethal D-scythe.

As you can see below its a relatively simply barrel swap. Admittedly they don't look as good as the new models themselves but are a good transition between the two styles.
The bases I got from a supplier on eBay. They're quite good and are a good counter weight to the old models top heavyness.

I have over 20 of the old models so will be converting 5 of these to begin with with the option of another 5 to make a full squad of 10 in the future.

Using the full kit I've magnetised the hands/arms so I can swap the weapons as I see fit.  I'll have 10 of these guys but will likely use them in units of 5.
I really love these models. The old ones had a ponderous bulkyness to them whereas these exude a sense of elegance and grace more closely associated with the Eldar while, also keeping that feeling of after-death like calm.

Watch this space as I paint these two units up.

If there's any requests to see how I've magnetised them ill gladly post a tutorial.

2k battle report, now with photos!

Some in game shots of my battle last Monday night.

My Battle lines preparing for contact with the enemy

Enemy reserves arrive, 10 Terminators!!!

My reserves also arrive but get shot to bits by the Terminators :(

Hello!
Goodbye!

In the background my Farseer struggles to take on Calgar and and his retinue

My banshees attempt to charge a 5 man tac squad...

...but after the combined fire of the tac squad and the full fire of  a Land Raider Crusader they throw in the towel.

My D-scythe wraithguard are tied up for the rest of the game by the scouts.

My Dark Reapers (proxyied by dragons) have run out of targets on the left flank.

Eldar Battle review - 2k

My third game with the new Eldar and I'm 3 wins from 3 games.

This is more of a review than a full report as I won't be going into turn by turn details just covering the major points.

I played a fellow gamer at BattleUX in Uxbridge last night, 2000 points, he brought his Ultramarines I took a mixed list of Eldar.

We played purge the alien, long table edge set up.

I had;
Autarch(warlord, assault of blades)
Fire sabre, fusion gun, warp jump generator.

Farseer(doom, fortune, executioner)
Both sets of runes
Singing spear

2 x 3 windriders w/ Shuricannons
2 x 5 rangers

8 wraithblades, axes

5 wraithguard, D-scythes
Wave serpent, scatter laser, Shuricannon

10 banshees
Exarch, executioner, shield of grace, disarm Wave serpent, t/l lance, Shuricannon

9 warp spiders
Exarch, spinneret rifle, fast shot, stalker Power blades

8 dark reapers

He had;
Calgar

Chaplain

5 assault terminators (2 claws)
All the above in a LR crusader

10 terminators
Assault cannon

2 tac squads (combat squadded)
Flamers, missile launchers

5 combat scouts

5 sniper scout
Telion

Typoon speeder

Predator destructor
Heavy bolters

On my left flank I deployed my reapers and one unit of rangers in cover. They faced off against a unit of tac marines and the sniper scouts with telion backed up by the the typhoon. I dominated this side of the board. Only telion remained alive by the end of the battle.

My right flank; rangers, lance-serpent with banshees.  These guys faced off against the other tac squad and the combat scouts.

In the centre I had my wraith blades with attached farseer, and my second serpent with the D-scythes on board.

They faced off against Calgar and his bodyguard in the crusader and the predator.

I held my spiders with attached Autarch in reserve along with my 2 squadrons of Windriders.

He held his 10 man terminator unit in reserve.

The centre field was the focus of the game with the crusader rushing forward and engaging my wraithblades. However charging though dangerous terrain felled 3 terminators and took a wound off Calgar!

The Wraithblades, aided by fortune and doom held out for 4 turns before finally succumbing. They did however whittle the unit down to 2 terminators and left Calgar on a single wound.

During this combat the 10 man terminator unit deep-striked next to Calgar and in front of my second waveserpent.  My D-scythe Wraithguard dutifully disembarked and slaughtered them to a man.

But this was purely a revenge killing as the terminators wiped out half my warp spiders and my Autarch which had arrived on my right.

In the later stages of the game my banshees utterly failed to root out a unit of marines not helped in any small part by taking the full fusillade from the land raider crusader which felled 6 of the unit making them fall back. With little chance of pulling off a charge the unit had little further impact on the game.

The crusader must surly be blessed not sustaining a single hit despite spending the entire game maneuvering through dangerous terrain.

The game ended on turn 6 the score being 9-6 to me.

On reflection,

Banshees have real trouble pressing forward to assault. Ill be looking else where to fill this role. Infiltrating scorpions or serpent-borne ghost-sword wielding Wraithblades. I may try the Banshees in a support or counter assault role in the future but they're unlikely to feature as a main spearhead unit.

Reapers are boss. They dominated an entire flank an now can be taken in sufficient numbers to weather a storm themselves. As an auto include in not so sure but they are definitely fighting for one of the heavy slots. they fared arguably better than my usual unit of scatter walkers and aren't as fragile.

Neither of us took flyers, This would have been an interesting dimension on the game and may well have swung it in favor of the flyers side.

The ghostaxe wielding Wraithblades did well to tie up and whittle down Clagar and his bodyguard unit but they are certainly not shock troops. They were the best unit for the job but they were always going to be second fiddle to assault terminators.
